Ak Zanj means "with angels" in Haitian Creole — a nod to the share the angels take during aging — and the 8 Year is the first age-stated rum in the range from Berling S.A., one of the oldest operating rum houses in Haiti. Co-founded in Port-au-Prince in 1862 by Labbé Barbancourt, it remains family-owned under his great-grandson Herbert Barbancourt Linge, one of the most respected figures in Haitian rum and clairin. This is cane-juice rum in the agricole tradition: fresh juice from Madame Mueze, a low-yield local sugarcane varietal, spontaneously fermented with wild yeast, run through a Creole column still more than 60 years old, then aged exclusively in ex-Cognac casks for eight years and bottled at 43% ABV.
