The ritual of the Christmas tree is our all-time favorite holiday tradition. The sound of the saw as it works through the frozen trunk. The creak of the tree’s fall, the whoosh as it hits the snow. Hands sticky with fresh sap after tying it to the roof of the car, trunk end forward for the sake of aerodynamics. Getting it through the front door, the explosion of needles each time a bow squeezes past the frame. Setting the beautiful, aromatic pine up in the living room and festooning it with decorations to the sound of a crackling fire. Some of the ornaments are heirlooms, passed down for generations. Others are frilly, beady arts and crafts projects donated by the newest additions to the family. And then, once the whole project is done, you can step back and feel the warmth spread over you as you look at that hallowed symbol of hope and cheer.
